Our success in Afghanistan is paramount in our continuing fight against extremists who seek to kill innocent people. For this reason, I’m pleased that our president finally recognized the need for additional troops to support the forces that are already in Afghanistan. However, his decision to set a deadline for withdrawing troops is deeply concerning and ill-informed, and provides the Taliban insurgency the ability to simply wait out our departure.
Instead of announcing a withdrawal plan based on an arbitrary timeline, President Obama should monitor conditions on the ground as the war progresses and use those conditions as benchmarks for success. We must define clear indicators of progress and react according to those measures to ensure the efforts of our military are not in vain.
We salute the brave men and women who personally sacrifice to wear the uniform. Their resolve and commitment to our freedom and ideals is extraordinary.
