Charlie Crist on Energy
Charlie Crist believes strongly in energy independence. America was founded on a document called the Declaration of Independence. Sadly, our nation today has become dependent on foreign sources of energy. This dependency results in over $700 billion being sent overseas to countries that hate America and kill our men and women in uniform. America is the most powerful nation on earth. America must become energy independent.
Charlie Crist believes Florida should have the ability to explore natural resources off our coastline as long as it remains far enough and safe enough. While exploration opportunities are being discussed in Washington, Florida needs a Senator at the table during these discussions.
Charlie Crist is a leader on moving Florida towards new energy opportunities. Under the Crist administration, renewable energy opportunities such as solar and wave energy have made significant impacts on our energy diversity. Renewable energy will provide the needed diversification to lead America into the future.
In addition to renewable energy, Charlie Crist has championed advances in alternative sources of energy. The Governor’s Energy Office has allocated millions of dollars in state grants for the research and development of cellulosic ethanol. Charlie Crist signed legislation calling for 10 percent of our state’s petroleum to include ethanol by 2010. Working with private industry and the University of Florida, Florida is a leader on the issue of cellulosic ethanol.
As Governor, Charlie Crist, along with the Florida Cabinet, approved the permitting for the first new nuclear plant in over thirty years. Charlie Crist supports nuclear energy and will push to streamline the federal nuclear regulatory process as a member of the U.S. Senate. Nuclear energy must be an integral part of our nation’s energy portfolio.
Democrats in Congress have offered a climate change bill that will have a negative impact on consumers and businesses. Energy and environmental policies, including legislation dealing with “cap and trade” will result in more government regulation and increased costs. The Congressional Budget Office stated that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid’s legislation will decrease economic growth up to 3.5% in 2050. It will also directly impact American families would pay an additional $1,761 per year. Charlie Crist opposes this legislation.
Instead of more government regulation, the United States must lead in advancing technology that produces domestic energy sources as well as incentivizing “green” businesses to expand opportunities for renewable and alternative sources of energy. Together our nation’s energy portfolio will improve.
