Charlie Crist on Spending

Governor Crist understands the importance of a hard earned dollar. As Governor, Charlie Crist vetoed a record $459 million in pork barrel spending in the 2007 state budget. On top of using his authority to veto specific appropriations, Governor Crist has also cut state spending by $7.4 billion in three short years. Leaders make difficult decisions on a regular basis.

As Florida and the nation experienced the most challenging economic times in a generation, Charlie Crist made the decision to reduce state spending in order to sign a balanced budget. This responsible fiscal approach led the CATO Institute to name Governor Crist the most fiscally conservative Governor in the nation (only three Governors received an “A” grade).

As Governor, Charlie Crist is constitutionally bound to sign a balanced state budget. By doing so, Governor Crist knows what it takes to provide necessary government services while also being fiscally prudent. This prudent approach also led Governor Crist to order each agency within state government to withhold future spending obligations, which allowed state government to live within its means during difficult economic times.

As Florida’s next U.S. Senator, Charlie Crist will fight against excessive government spending. He will propose legislation calling on a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. As our national deficit now stands at an unprecedented $12 trillion dollars, Charlie Crist will fight each day to end excessive spending and bring fiscal responsibility back to the Congress.

Each American’s share of the national debt totals $40,000. This is an astonishing figure, yet it represents the lack of fiscal discipline in Washington. Future generations of Americans will be hampered with mounting debt unless we send leaders to Washington to say no. Charlie Crist will be that leader.
