Charlie Crist on the 2nd Amendment

Governor Crist has never wavered in his support of the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms. This support has been recognized with tremendous support by gun owners and sportsmen across Florida. Governor Crist opposes any attempts to limit access to gun ownership.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) and Florida Sportsmen Coalition summed it up best in their 2006 endorsement of Charlie Crist for Governor, “Throughout your career as a Florida legislator and statewide office holder, you have been unwavering and have stood strong in support of law abiding gun owners and sportsmen…No one has been stronger in support of the Second Amendment, self defense and anti-crime issues than Charlie Crist and we sincerely appreciate your solid pro-sportsmen, pro-Second Amendment, pro-freedom record. Your outstanding and unblemished record on issues important to firearms owners and sportsmen stands above all others and is the mark of a true champion of freedom and the Bill of Rights.”

Governor Crist supported and signed pro-gun legislation in 2008 that protects gun owners to possess a firearm in any private vehicle that is parked in a parking lot or place of employment. The legislation also prevents businesses from searching private vehicles of customers or employees.

In 2009, Governor Crist vetoed a raid of $6 million dollars from the Concealed Weapons and Firearms Licensing fund. The NRA stated that without the veto, gun owners across Florida would have experienced a “defacto tax.”

In July 2009, Governor Crist was named “Gun Rights Defender of the Month” by the Citizens Committee for the right to Keep and Bear Arms in “Recognition of their dedication to preserving and protecting the second amendment to the United States Constitution.”

Governor Crist in November 2009, joined other defenders of the second amendment by signing on to an Amicus Brief in the case of McDonald v. City of Chicago. The Amicus Brief calls on the U.S. Supreme Court to preserve Americans’ second amendment right to bear arms as a fundamental right that should be incorporated against the states by the Fourteenth Amendment. Without such a decision from the Supreme Court, all responsible gun owners are at risk of losing their gun rights by more intrusive, restrictive local and state laws.

As Florida’s next U.S. Senator, Charlie Crist will fight to defend our second amendment freedom.  Charlie Crist will fight against legislative efforts to prohibit the access, purchasing and registering of a firearm. Florida gun owners and sportsmen will have no better friend in the United States Senate than Charlie Crist.
