ST. PETERSBURG — Charlie Crist, candidate for governor of Florida, released a statement following a widely distributed memo sent to Florida school districts and school boards by Gov. Ron DeSantis’s Education Commissioner Many Diaz Jr. prompting school officials to disregard federal protections for LGBTQ+ students.
In a statement, Crist said:
“LGBTQ+ students should feel safe, supported, and welcomed in our schools — it’s about basic human decency and respect.
“In Ron DeSantis’s Florida, the Education Commissioner has been empowered to tear down these vulnerable children rather than working to improve our kid’s educational outcomes. It’s reprehensible.
“Demanding that school administrators and school board members ignore federal protections put into place to help kids is a new low for this Administration. Florida deserves better, Florida’s students deserve better, and Florida’s LGBTQ+ community deserves better.”
