With Hurricane Ian Approaching, Crist Slams Ron DeSantis As “Worst Property Insurance Gov. in Florida History”

Sixth Insurance Company Declared Insolvent This Year

ST. PETERSBURG — Today, Charlie Crist, candidate for governor of Florida, blasted Ron DeSantis as the worst property insurance governor in Florida history as a sixth insurance company, FedNat, has been declared insolvent with a major hurricane approaching.

Thanks to Ron DeSantis, Florida is now facing a double-barreled threat this week: a potentially catastrophic hurricane and a property insurance crisis of the Governor’s own making.

Floridians now pay the highest property insurance premiums in the country, going from average premiums under $2,000 when DeSantis took office to over $4,200 today. DeSantis rate hikes translate to an additional $15 billion in DeSanTAX Florida homeowners are paying in 2022 alone.

As Governor, Crist called a special session that stabilized the insurance market, held insurance companies accountable, and lowered rates 10%. His Affordable Florida for All plan includes detailed suggestions to fix the problem with independent experts describing Crist’s plan as “tremendous” and a “massive, quick, quick fix for the market.”

In a statement, Charlie Crist said:

“Ron DeSantis is the worst property insurance governor in Florida history, period.

“Gov. DeSantis let these insurance companies double Floridians rates and they’re still going belly up when homeowners need them most. You pay and pay and pay, and the insurance company isn’t there for you in the end anyway.

“This weekend, I demanded that the Governor provide emergency, 90-day coverage for homeowners who were dropped by their failing companies.

“It’s more important than ever that this governor steps up and acts like he cares about Floridians.”
